Shame in the Heart of Delhi: Chain-Snatching Attack on Woman MP in High-Security Area

New Delhi : In a shocking incident that raises serious questions about women’s safety in the national capital, Lok Sabha MP Adv. R. Sudha from Tamil Nadu was allegedly attacked and robbed during her morning walk in one of Delhi’s most secure areas — the Diplomatic Enclave near the Embassy zone in Chanakyapuri.

According to Adv. Sudha, the incident took place around 6:00 AM when she was walking with a Rajya Sabha MP from Tamil Nadu. A helmeted man approached her, violently snatched her gold chain, and tore her clothes before fleeing on a two-wheeler at a slow speed.

“I raised an alarm, but no one came to help. The fact that this could happen in such a high-security zone is shocking,” she said.

On her way to the government guest house after the incident, she encountered police personnel and informed them, urging them to apprehend the culprit. However, she alleged that the police did not alert nearby stations and instead told her to file a formal complaint.

Adv. Sudha proceeded to the Chanakyapuri police station, where she lodged an FIR, and has also emailed the Union Home Minister and the Lok Sabha Speaker seeking immediate action.

“What is most disturbing is the complete lack of security presence in such a sensitive area. The ‘Double Engine Sarkar’ talks about women’s safety, but where is it? It has failed to protect women, even elected representatives,” she said, terming the police response as “lethargic.”

The incident underscores a deeper concern — if women MPs and public representatives are unsafe in the heart of the national capital, the vulnerability of ordinary citizens is far greater. Security experts say the attack in a zone housing multiple foreign missions highlights glaring lapses in patrolling and preventive policing.

So far, Delhi Police have not released any official statement on the incident or the status of the investigation.
