In a significant move towards reclaiming Mumbai’s cultural heritage, the Maharashtra government has greenlit the renaming of seven suburban railway stations, ushering in a new era of local identity and pride. The proposal, championed by Member of Parliament Rahul Shewale, has garnered widespread support and marks a crucial step in shedding colonial-era vestiges from the city’s transit infrastructure.

Under the initiative, iconic railway stations in Mumbai will undergo a transformation, reflecting their historical and cultural significance. The full list of proposed changes includes:

Currey Road to be rechristened Lalbaug
Sandhurst Road to adopt the name Dongri
Marine Lines to be renamed Mumbadevi
Charni Road set to become Girgaon
Cotton Green to be known as Kalachowki
Dockyard to take on the name Mazgaon
King’s Circle to be rebranded as Tirthankar Parshvanath

Member of Parliament Rahul Shewale, a vocal advocate for the renaming campaign, emphasized the importance of shedding colonial-era names and embracing India’s sovereignty.

“The positive response from Mumbaikars has now reached the state government, and Chief Minister Shinde’s in principle approval is a crucial step forward,” stated Shewale.

With the Maharashtra government’s nod secured, the proposal now awaits final approval from the central government. Upon receiving formal endorsement, these changes will usher in a new chapter for Mumbai’s railway network, reflecting the city’s vibrant history and diverse cultural tapestry.
