Mumbai: ‘SELECTED EPISODES’area few pages from a lawyer’s diary relating to some legal skirmishes; fought largely up-hilland the strategies devised to turn the tables. There are eight incidents. The Book, which is authored by a seasoned lawyer, Amt Kumar Bhowmik, is exhilarating. It also enlightens on the practical approach, from a lawyer’s point of view, to overcome the odds, with the use of appropriate tactics, which vary as per the changing circumstances. One can easily relate to these happenings and admire the ploys devised – even though the methods are, sometimes, unconventional, to say the least! The author has not pulled back any punches.I read the book in one sitting! I am briefly setting out a gist of some of the contents in ‘Selected Episodes’.
Dhananjoy Haldar is a slick and ambitious youngster, who comes to Bombay from Hazaribagh, with the sole aim of enriching himself and his accomplices, through methods which are rank and questionable. He lures well-heeled men, using young Rima as bait. Haldar and his cohorts, Tapan and Reba Sarkar, with their daughter, Rima, extort affluent men looking for a quick romp between the sheets. In‘Rainbow Colours’,Lalit Vashist, a homo-sexual,is black-mailed by his own fatherinto tying the knotwith his mistress. On the first night after the nuptials, the father and the newly -wed bride continue to occupy the single bed-room, while Lalit is parked in the hall. In any event, Lalit is repulsed by the naked female form.Matters go out of control when the father; a failed businessman, propping himself as ‘Swami Chintamani’, dies suddenly, two months later,of a heart failure. Lalitis is stuck in a sham marriage, while Arvind, his love- interest, gets possessive and suspicious. How is this sticky situation over-come?‘Shefali’s Ordeal begins when she gets pregnant by her journalist lover, who tricks her into being admitted to an Unmarried Women Shelter’ in the fifth month of her pregnancy; telling her she will be well cared for by doctors in this ‘Nursing Home’! How does she get out of these complicated situations and, instead, put her paramour on the mat, after having his daughter? In ‘The Japanese Connection’,Sayali, a strong- willed girl, lives with Kunal in Japan. She does not believe in the institution of marriage. However, when Kunal Files a Petition for Judicial Separation under the Hindu Marriage Act in the Family Courts in Bombay, she is out on a limb. Kunal Has his sights clearly set on her money and property; demanding a huge amount as ‘Interim Maintenance ‘ and a leviathan sum as alimony. Sayali did marry’ Kunal in Tokyo – but underShinto rites, which are not recognized in India. Using the tried and tested tactics mooted by ‘Chanakya’ 2,500 years ago, she succeeds in wriggling out of the mess, which, in the first place, she had herself created! ClaireFernandes marries ArifAl-Kutbi, a Palestinian butwho is a citizen of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia(KSA). After Arif dies of cancer,Claire and her three children are left high and dry by his Indian partner. Shegives a ‘knock -out punch’ to her husband’s former Saudi associates by seeking reliefs under the ‘Shariah’ and ‘hudood‘laws’, demanding for the amputation of their right hands and left feet for larceny. They had ‘snatched the bread from the mouths of her children’, who were citizens of the KSA, like their father.
