India’s rail connectivity is set for a major upgrade with the anticipated launch of the New Delhi-Srinagar Vande Bharat Express. Indian Railways aims to complete preparations by December 31, allowing the high-speed train to begin operations in time for Republic Day celebrations in January 2024. The train will connect Delhi to Srinagar, eventually extending to Kanyakumari, marking a significant milestone in rail infrastructure.
The Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla rail link, a crucial component of the route, has made substantial progress. The challenging 111-km Banihal-Srinagar stretch has been completed, paving the way for seamless operations. If the current pace continues, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to inaugurate the train on January 26, 2024.
In another development, Indian Railways plans to launch Vande Bharat Sleeper Trains by 2025-26 to enhance long-distance travel. Ten such trains are expected by the end of the financial year 2025-26, offering advanced safety features, world-class interiors, and multiple travel classes, including First-Class AC, 2-tier AC, and 3-tier AC. Constructed with high-strength stainless steel, these trains will accommodate up to 823 passengers, promising greater comfort and safety for travelers.
The Delhi-Srinagar Vande Bharat Express and the upcoming sleeper variants underscore Indian Railways’ efforts to modernize and enhance connectivity while boosting economic growth and tourism across the nation.
