Mumbai: A video allegedly showing a security guard disrespecting the Marathi language has gone viral, causing widespread outrage across Maharashtra. The incident occurred at the L&T complex in Powai, where the security guard was reportedly filmed saying, “Marathi gaya tel lagane” (Marathi can go to hell). The derogatory comment sparked a swift response from Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) workers, who arrived at the scene to confront the guard.

In the video, the security guard is seen surrounded by a group of MNS workers. At one point, he appears to apologize, standing with his hands joined in a gesture of remorse. The MNS workers can be heard telling him to lower his arrogance and urging him to learn the Marathi language if he had not already. The video quickly gained traction on social media, leading to heightened tensions over language politics in Maharashtra. As of now, no police action has been reported regarding the incident.

This controversy comes on the heels of a similar altercation on March 25, when a D-Mart employee in Versova, Andheri West, allegedly refused to communicate in Marathi and instead opted to speak in Hindi. The employee’s comments, “Nahi aata meko Marathi, Main Hindi hi bolega, Kya karega? Jo karna hai wo kar” (I don’t know Marathi, I will speak only in Hindi. Do what you want), ignited protests by MNS members. Versova unit president Sandesh Desai and other MNS workers visited the D-Mart store to address the issue, further intensifying the debate on linguistic pride in the state.
