Patna: With just days left before the nomination deadline, the INDIA alliance remains entangled in a fierce seat-sharing tussle in Bihar, exposing deep divisions within the opposition front.

As the October 17 deadline for filing nominations for the first phase of polling (scheduled on November 6) approaches, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi and party chief Mallikarjun Kharge reportedly held a crucial telephonic discussion with Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) patriarch Lalu Prasad Yadav on Thursday. The conversation was aimed at resolving the ongoing impasse over seat distribution — a dispute that threatens to derail the opposition’s united front.

According to sources, Lalu Yadav conveyed that “accommodating all allies is essential to maintaining the spirit of the INDIA alliance,” stressing that smaller partners must not feel neglected in the seat-sharing arithmetic.

The Congress, which had contested 70 seats in the 2020 Bihar Assembly polls, has been firm on its demand for at least 60 constituencies this time. However, the RJD — leading the bloc in Bihar — has so far offered 52 seats to the grand old party, a proposal that Congress leaders have rejected outright.

With state-level talks hitting a roadblock, the matter has now escalated to the top leadership. Party insiders say both sides are under pressure to reach a compromise before the nomination window closes.

Meanwhile, the Congress on Wednesday night released its first list of candidates, signalling it may move ahead independently if negotiations fail. On the same day, RJD leader and former Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav filed his nomination from Raghopur, marking the official start of the high-stakes electoral battle.

In sharp contrast, the ruling NDA has already finalised its seat-sharing formula. The BJP and JD(U) will contest 101 seats each, while Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) will fight on 29 seats. Smaller allies, Rashtriya Lok Morcha (RLM) and Hindustani Awam Morcha (HAM), have been allotted six seats each.
