Kashmir: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Tuesday visited flood and landslide-hit areas of Ramban district to take stock of the devastation caused by heavy rainfall on April 20. The calamity triggered flash floods and landslides, claiming at least three lives—including two children—in Bagahana village, where two houses collapsed under the debris.

Inspecting the worst-affected zones on foot, CM Abdullah emphasized the administration’s commitment to prioritizing life-saving efforts and immediate relief distribution. “This is the third day. In these three days, senior ministers have come here every day… Yesterday, I inspected the situation on foot… The restoration work is being done as rapidly as possible. Our first priority was to save invaluable lives. We evacuated people and took them to safe areas. Our second priority is to reconnect the roads,” Abdullah told mediapersons during his visit.

He further assured that a single track of the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway—a key lifeline for the region—will be reopened within 24 hours. “The officers have assured that the single track of the highway will be opened within 24 hours. The debris will be removed after the highway is reopened… Relief material is being provided… After the restoration, we will assess and provide compensation as per the norms of the SDRF and NDRF,” he added, expressing confidence that the Centre would extend full support.

Union Minister Jitendra Singh also took to Twitter, stating that restoration of essential services is progressing well despite the harsh weather and terrain. “Full support of the administration is assured,” he tweeted.

During his visit, Abdullah travelled by road from Srinagar and trekked several kilometres through rugged terrain to reach Marog and Kela Morh—two of the worst-hit locations. According to an official statement from the Jammu and Kashmir Department of Information and Public Relations, the Chief Minister was accompanied by the Deputy Commissioner of Ramban, as well as senior civil and police officials.

Residents, visibly distressed, stopped the CM’s vehicle en route to share their grievances. Abdullah took time to interact with the locals and the district administration, offering condolences to the families of the deceased. “The government stands shoulder to shoulder with the victims of this tragedy,” he assured.
