Satara: In a major breakthrough in the Satara rape and suicide case that has sent shockwaves across Maharashtra’s medical community, police on Sunday arrested Sub-Inspector Gopal Badane after he surrendered at the Phaltan Police Station.

Badane, who had been on the run since his suspension, is accused of repeatedly raping a woman doctor and abetting her suicide. Officials confirmed that he will be produced before the court later today.

The arrest marks a significant turn in the investigation into the tragic death of the 28-year-old government medical officer from Phaltan sub-district hospital. The doctor, a native of Beed district, was found hanging in a hotel room on Thursday night under suspicious circumstances.

Just a day earlier, police had arrested another accused — Prashant Bankar, the son of the deceased doctor’s landlord — for allegedly subjecting her to severe mental harassment. His name, along with Badane’s, appeared in the four-page suicide note recovered from the scene and in a message scrawled on her palm.

According to the police, the suicide note paints a disturbing picture of exploitation and pressure. The doctor accused Sub-Inspector Gopal Badane of raping her on four separate occasions, while alleging that Prashant Bankar constantly harassed her. The note also makes grave claims against a sitting Member of Parliament (MP) and his aides, accusing them of pressuring her to forge medical reports for individuals implicated in criminal cases.

“Both accused have been booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code. We are conducting a comprehensive investigation into the rape and harassment allegations, as well as the purported involvement of political figures,” said Satara Superintendent of Police Tushar Doshi, confirming the arrests.

Investigators revealed that the victim had endured months of torment before her death. Her suicide note details over five months of continuous abuse and mentions that she had filed as many as 21 complaints with different authorities — all of which went unanswered.

In one chilling account, she described being threatened over the phone by an MP after she refused to issue a false medical certificate. Her cousin later corroborated these allegations, claiming that she had confided about being forced to falsify medical documents under political pressure.
