New Delhi: In a dramatic twist to the 2025 Delhi Assembly Elections, Congress leader Sandeep Dikshit emerged as the unexpected factor behind AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal’s shocking defeat in the New Delhi constituency. While Dikshit himself did not secure a win, his presence in the race split the opposition votes, paving the way for BJP candidate Parvesh Verma’s victory.

BJP’s Verma won the seat by a margin of 4,089 votes, while Dikshit secured 4,568 votes—numbers that suggest a direct impact on Kejriwal’s loss. Political analysts argue that had Congress not fielded a candidate, Kejriwal might have held onto his seat.

For Dikshit, the election carried a deeper meaning—symbolic retribution for his late mother, former Delhi CM Sheila Dikshit. In 2013, Kejriwal had ended Congress’s 15-year reign by defeating Sheila Dikshit in the same New Delhi seat with a massive 25,000-vote margin. Now, 12 years later, her son played a role in Kejriwal’s own downfall.

The BJP secured a landslide victory in Delhi, winning 48 out of 70 seats, while AAP was reduced to 22. Congress, despite its influence in splitting votes, failed to open its account once again. The election was largely fought on corruption allegations, with the BJP targeting Kejriwal over the liquor scam and the ‘Sheeshmahal’ controversy.

As Delhi’s political landscape undergoes a major shift, one thing is clear—Sandeep Dikshit’s strategic presence in the polls altered the course of history, making him a silent yet significant player in Kejriwal’s defeat.
