Former Indian wrestler Sakshi Malik has issued a stern warning, threatening to lead protests unless Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh and his close associate Sanjay Singh are ousted from their positions within the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI).
The wrestling community in India has been rocked by allegations of sexual and mental harassment against female grapplers, with some of the country’s top wrestlers initiating widespread protests against former WFI chief Brij Bhushan Singh. The agitation gained momentum, with serious allegations leading to a demand for Singh’s removal from his post.
The situation escalated with the election of Sanjay Singh as the new WFI chief, succeeding Brij Bhushan Singh. However, concerns persisted as Brij Bhushan continued to wield significant influence over the federation, exacerbating the wrestlers’ discontent.
Expressing her dissatisfaction, Sakshi Malik publicly resigned from wrestling and joined forces with Bajrang Punia in a press conference condemning the WFI elections earlier this year. This bold move underscored the seriousness of the issues within the federation and the urgent need for reform.
Taking her grievances to social media, Sakshi Malik implored the government to take immediate action against Sanjay Singh and demanded strict measures against BJP’s Brij Bhushan. In a video message on X, Malik reiterated the plea to avoid a renewed wave of protests, urging authorities to intervene and address the underlying issues.
Moreover, Malik accused Sanjay Singh of manipulating the United World Wrestling (UWW) to secure his position in the WFI, shedding light on external factors influencing the internal dynamics of the federation.
The demand for leadership change within the Wrestling Federation of India reflects the growing discontent among wrestlers and underscores the need for transparency, accountability, and a safe environment for athletes. As Sakshi Malik and other prominent figures in Indian wrestling continue to push for reform, the future of the sport hangs in the balance, awaiting decisive action from authorities.
