Mumbai: Maharashtra Congress leader Sachin Sawant has launched a sharp attack on Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, questioning the ambiguity surrounding the BJP-led government’s stance on farm loan waivers.
In a strongly worded statement, Sawant said that the Chief Minister must clearly spell out what he considers to be the “right and appropriate time” for announcing a farm loan waiver. “Along with this,” he added, “the government must explain the rules and procedures involved in implementing such waivers, so that farmers are not left in the dark.”
Raising questions over the BJP’s election promises, Sawant further demanded to know why the party’s manifesto failed to specify this so-called “appropriate time” for loan waivers. “The public deserves an answer. If the right time was known, why wasn’t it mentioned in the manifesto?” he asked.
Alleging a pattern of broken promises, the Congress leader remarked, “The BJP has, over the years, shown a consistent tendency to betray public trust. Misleading the people has become their hallmark.” He also criticised Chief Minister Fadnavis directly, claiming, “Twisting words and shifting goalposts seems to be his favourite pastime.”
Sawant’s comments come amid growing pressure on the state government to clarify its position on farmer relief measures, especially in the wake of mounting rural distress and delayed monsoon in parts of Maharashtra.
