New Delhi: Renowned Telugu poet Dr. Perugu Ramakrishna has been honoured with the prestigious SAARC Literary Award at the 66th SAARC Literary Conference held in New Delhi from November 9 to 12. The event was organised under the aegis of the Foundation of SAARC Writers and Literature (FOSWAL).
The inaugural session commenced with a welcome address by Ajit Kaur, President of FOSWAL, who highlighted the foundation’s remarkable journey as an Apex Body of the SAARC region.
The Chief Guest of the ceremony was Dr. Madhav Kaushik, President of the Sahitya Akademi, while the keynote address was delivered by noted thinker and political psychologist Professor Ashis Nandy.
Among the distinguished guests were H.E. Mrs. Mahishini Kolonne, High Commissioner of Sri Lanka; M. Riaz Hamidullah, High Commissioner of Bangladesh; Aishath Azeema, High Commissioner of the Maldives; and Dr. K.S. Rao, former Secretary of the Sahitya Akademi.
Three eminent personalities were honoured with the SAARC Lifetime Achievement Award —
• Professor Abhi Subedi (Nepal)
• Professor Ashis Nandy (India)
• Dr. Madhav Kaushik, President of the Sahitya Akademi (India)
The SAARC Literary Awards were presented to:
• Anurasiri Hettige (Sri Lanka)
• Faridur Rahman (Bangladesh)
• Ibrahim Waheed (Maldives)
• Kamrul Hassan (Bangladesh)
• Laxmi Mali (Nepal)
• Dr. Perugu Ramakrishna (India)
The awards were conferred by Dr. Madhav Kaushik, along with the High Commissioner of Sri Lanka.
During the book release ceremony that followed, Sahitya Akademi President Dr. Madhav Kaushik unveiled Dr. Perugu Ramakrishna’s latest English poetry collection “Echoes of Nellore.”
A retired GST officer from Nellore, Andhra Pradesh, Dr. Ramakrishna has earned wide international acclaim for his literary contributions. With 30 published works—including poetry collections, translations, and edited volumes—he has been the recipient of numerous national and international honours.
Notably, Dr. Perugu Ramakrishna is the first Telugu writer ever to receive the SAARC Literary Award.
All SAARC delegates and fellow writers present at the event extended their heartfelt congratulations to Dr. Ramakrishna, celebrating his remarkable achievement as a milestone in Telugu and South Asian literature.
