Political equations in Bihar appear to be shifting ahead of the Rajya Sabha elections, with fresh speculation of a joint opposition strategy after a high-profile meeting between Tejashwi Yadav and Akhtarul Iman.

The meeting has fuelled strong indications that the RJD-led opposition bloc could back a common candidate for the crucial fifth Rajya Sabha seat from Bihar.

“Tejashwi Ji Has Assured Us”

After the discussion, AIMIM’s Bihar chief Akhtarul Iman claimed that Tejashwi Yadav had given positive signals regarding support.

“Tejashwi ji has assured us. After all, we have to stand by each other on important matters in the coming days,” Iman said, adding that he had requested RJD’s backing in the Rajya Sabha contest. He also indicated that AIMIM would return the favour in future political situations.

On his part, Tejashwi Yadav, who is the national working president of the Rashtriya Janata Dal, confirmed that preparations for the polls were already underway. “We will field our candidate and we are confident of victory,” he told reporters, without revealing the name.

Numbers Game in Bihar Assembly

The 243-member Bihar Assembly arithmetic makes the fifth seat highly competitive. RJD has 25 MLAs, while AIMIM has five. The Indian National Congress holds nine seats and the Bahujan Samaj Party has one legislator.

On the ruling side, the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Janata Dal (United) are expected to secure two seats each comfortably. The real contest is likely to unfold over the fifth vacancy.

JD(U) and BJP Weigh Options

Sources suggest that JD(U) may nominate Manish Kumar Verma, a former bureaucrat considered close to Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, for one of its seats. Ramnath Thakur, son of socialist leader Karpoori Thakur, is also likely to continue in the Upper House.

Meanwhile, the BJP has seen multiple names circulating within party circles. Bhojpuri actor-singer Pawan Singh recently met a senior BJP leader, triggering speculation. However, he described it as merely a courtesy visit, saying he remains a loyal “soldier” of the party and that the final decision rests with the leadership.

Opposition Strategy Under Spotlight

The possibility of RJD and AIMIM working together for a single candidate could reshape the contest dynamics. If smaller parties consolidate behind one nominee, the fifth seat could turn into a tight and politically symbolic battle.
