Delhi: In a chilling revelation that has sent shockwaves through the national security establishment, investigators have uncovered that the Red Fort car blast, which claimed 12 lives, was part of a larger terror conspiracy originally planned to strike during Republic Day celebrations — with another deadly assault plotted for Diwali.
According to high-level investigation sources, Dr. Muzammil Ganaie, arrested from Faridabad, disclosed during interrogation that he and Dr. Umar Nabi alias Dr. Umar Mohammad had conducted a detailed recce of the Red Fort in early January, just weeks before Republic Day. The chilling details were unearthed from dump data retrieved from Dr. Muzammil’s mobile phone, exposing the elaborate groundwork laid by the terror operatives.
Officials revealed that the terror module, linked to Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) and Ansar Ghazwat-ul-Hind (AGH), had planned to “make a statement” by executing twin attacks — one during Republic Day and another during the festive Diwali rush.
“The Red Fort was not a random choice; it was symbolic — a message meant for the nation,” said an investigator, adding that the group had planned “maximum chaos on national occasions.”
The explosion, which occurred on a busy Monday evening, came just hours after eight people — including three doctors — were arrested and over 2,900 kg of explosives seized from Haryana’s Faridabad. Sources revealed that Dr. Umar, a Pulwama-based physician, was allegedly driving the Hyundai i20 that exploded near the Red Fort metro station.
Officials now believe the blast may have been accidentally triggered while the suspects were transporting an improvised explosive device (IED). “The bomb was premature and not fully developed, which limited its destructive impact,” an official said, noting the absence of a crater or shrapnel at the scene.
Investigators also recovered two cartridges, a live round, and over 40 forensic samples from the site, with preliminary analysis indicating the presence of ammonium nitrate and another more potent explosive yet to be confirmed by forensic labs.
The Faridabad crackdown has exposed what officials describe as a ‘white-collar terror network’, involving highly educated individuals with medical and academic backgrounds, including Dr. Shaheen Sayeed from Al-Falah University.
As forensic teams continue to piece together evidence, sources suggest the Red Fort blast may have been just the first spark in a series of high-profile terror strikes aimed at national symbols and festive gatherings — a plan that, thankfully, was thwarted just in time.
