Mumbai: Shiv Sena MLA Ravindra Waikar wrote a letter to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Wednesday, requesting to conduct the structural audit of the high risk private buildings in Jogeshwari Assembly constituency.

After the recent incidents of collapse of building in the city, in order to ensure the safety of the occupants of high risk buildings in Jogeshwari area, Waikar had requested the BMC’s K East ward to conduct structural audit and present the report with the suggestion for the nature of work required to be done in the old private buildings.

According to Waiker, BMC should cooperate to issue permission where required for the structural audit of the building which are in dilapidated condition. The number of unfortunate incidents due to collapse of old buildings in Mumbai city as well as suburbs are increasing. BMC has a record of loss of life and property due to this.

“According to recent survey there are about 443 dangerous buildings in Mumbai. As the owners of the old buildings in Mumbai are deliberately neglecting the repairs of the old buildings so that the occupants will be left with no option but to risk their lives in that building or to leave the buildings”, said Waikar.

In addition, the fact that some of the buildings are overcrowded or adjacent to the road does not rule out the possibility of large-scale financial loss and loss of life in the event of an accident, Waikar said in the letter.

These are a few names of the buildings which were mentioned in the letter given the K East ward off BMC. The buildings are from Ward No. 72 in various areas of Jogeshwari Assembly constituency they are Rane Sadan, Trimurti Cooperative society, Pramila Sadan Road No. 3, Shivneri Society, Jogeshwari Santoshimata Cooperative society, PP Hayes Compound, Ganga Bhavan, Vyas Building, Ganga Niwas, Aradhana, Lakshmi are old and in dilapidated condition.

In order to save the lives of the occupants of such buildings and also to protect the buildings to avoid financial loss, BMC should send notice to the owners of these buildings asking them to conduct a structural audit of the buildings and submit the report at the earliest to avoid any mishap.-By Vikas Nag
