In the upcoming Lok Sabha election, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi is set to contest against Kerala BJP chief K Surendran in the high-profile Wayanad constituency. Historically a Congress stronghold since 2009, Wayanad poses a formidable challenge for Surendran as he aims to disrupt the dominance of the Congress-Left alliance in Kerala’s political landscape.
Gandhi, who secured victory in Wayanad in 2019 after losing his Amethi seat to Union Minister Smriti Irani, will defend his Lok Sabha membership against Surendran’s bid for electoral ascendancy. Surendran, appointed as the head of the BJP Kerala unit in 2020, has emerged as a prominent figure known for leading protests against the entry of young women into the Sabarimala temple.
Challenging Gandhi in Wayanad marks a significant move for Surendran, who previously secured the third position in the Pathanamthitta constituency during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Despite facing defeat in the 2016 assembly polls from Manjeswaram and a subsequent bypoll in 2019, Surendran remains determined to make his mark in Kerala’s political arena.
The electoral battle in Wayanad adds to the political fervor in Kerala, with the BJP making strategic nominations across the state. Former vice-chancellor K S Radhakrishnan will contest from Ernakulam, while actor-turned-politician G Krishnakumar will represent the party in Kollam. T N Sarasu, a former educator, will vie for victory in Alathur, Palakkad.
The BJP’s fifth candidate list also features notable entrants like actor Kangana Ranaut, who will make her electoral debut in Mandi, Himachal Pradesh. With 111 candidates across 17 states, including industrialist Naveen Jindal and former Calcutta High Court judge Abhijit Gangopadhyay, the BJP aims to bolster its electoral prospects with a diverse lineup.
Wayanad emerges as one of the key battlegrounds in Kerala’s electoral landscape, setting the stage for a riveting showdown between Rahul Gandhi and K Surendran as they vie for victory and political supremacy in the region.
