New Delhi: Ahead of the 2025 Delhi Assembly elections, political controversy has erupted surrounding the significance of Purvanchali voters in the national capital. A large number of these voters, mostly from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, are now being seen as a decisive factor in the upcoming polls, holding sway over 17 to 20 assembly seats in Delhi. As the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) prepares for the battle, the Purvanchali community’s influence has become a key focus of both the ruling party and its opponents.

The controversy started when Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal made alleged remarks about the Purvanchali people during a media interaction. Kejriwal accused the BJP of attempting to manipulate the election process by “bringing people from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar” to create fake votes. His comments immediately drew criticism from BJP and Congress leaders, accusing him of using divisive tactics. On Friday, protests erupted outside Kejriwal’s residence, with BJP workers raising slogans and attempting to breach security. The police were forced to use water cannons to disperse the protesters.

In response to the backlash, Kejriwal shifted into damage control mode, emphasizing the work done by his government to improve the conditions of unauthorised colonies, which are home to a large number of Purvanchali voters. He accused the BJP of failing to address the issues of the Purvanchali community despite being in power for years.

According to reports, Purvanchali voters make up approximately 25% of the total electorate in Delhi, with around 40 lakh voters in this demographic. Their dominance in the 17 to 20 seats of the Delhi Assembly means they can play a decisive role in the outcome of the elections. This large and politically significant group is heavily concentrated in unauthorised colonies in the capital.

To engage with this community, Kejriwal’s AAP has implemented measures such as declaring Chhath, a significant festival for Purvanchalis, as a holiday in Delhi. The party has also built special ghats near the Yamuna River and provided artificial water ponds in unauthorised colonies to accommodate the religious needs of the community.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also acknowledged the importance of Purvanchali voters in recent rallies. He highlighted the central government’s efforts to provide ownership rights to residents of unauthorised colonies, contrasting them with AAP’s alleged failure to deliver basic services like roads and water in these areas.
