Mumbai: MLC Satyajeet Tambe pressed strongly in the Maharashtra Legislature for the proposed Pune–Nashik railway line to follow a direct alignment, stating that people across the region are firmly opposed to any unnecessary diversion of the route.

Responding in the House, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis assured members that a committee of expert consultants from the Centre would be appointed to examine the feasibility of maintaining a straighter route. He said a detailed study report would be submitted within the next three to four months.

Demand for Direct Alignment Gains Momentum

The proposed alignment through Nashik–Sinnar–Sangamner–Akole–Narayangaon–Manchar–Chakan has received strong backing from local representatives and citizen groups. According to Tambe, residents have formed action committees in several villages, and protests including road blockades have been staged to demand that the railway line not be diverted unnecessarily.

“There is widespread confusion among citizens that the route is being altered citing technical reasons related to GMRT. However, no official technical objection has been formally recorded so far,” Tambe pointed out in the House.

GMRT Buffer Zone Cited as Concern

The Chief Minister clarified that discussions had been held with the Union government regarding the matter. He explained that the buffer zone of the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT), an internationally significant radio astronomy facility, has been flagged as a potential technical constraint. According to him, compliance with prescribed norms around the observatory is mandatory.

Despite this, Fadnavis said efforts would be made to explore an alternative that remains as close as possible to the originally proposed straight alignment. “We will appoint expert consultants at the central level and seek a comprehensive report within three to four months,” he assured.

Series of Follow-Ups and Meetings

Tambe highlighted his sustained efforts on the issue, listing multiple meetings held over the past year. These included discussions with former Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, Railway officials, and Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. The matter was also raised during the winter and budget sessions of the state legislature.

A Tribute to Ajit Pawar’s Vision

Tambe noted that the late Ajit Pawar had envisioned a direct Pune–Nashik railway corridor and had consistently supported the straight alignment. “If the railway is completed on the direct route, it will be a true tribute to his dream,” Tambe said.

Continued Struggle Promised

Reiterating his commitment, Tambe said the campaign for a direct route would continue until a clear decision is taken. With the expert committee now expected to examine technical and regulatory aspects, the coming months could prove decisive for one of Maharashtra’s most anticipated railway infrastructure projects.
