The Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train project, aimed at revolutionizing inter-city travel, is making significant strides forward, with officials from the National High Speed Rail Corporation Ltd. (NHSRCL) reporting satisfactory progress in crucial aspects of the ambitious venture.
At the heart of the project lies the construction of a key 21-kilometer underground-undersea tunnel, presenting a myriad of challenges. However, despite the complexities involved, work on this tunnel, including a 7-kilometer stretch running under the sea, is progressing steadily between the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) and Shilphata in Thane.
Multiple shafts are being established along the tunnel route to facilitate the lowering of tunnel boring machines (TBMs) and expedite the excavation process. Excavation work is underway at Mumbai High Speed Railway Station in Bandra, Vikhroli, Sawli, Shilphata, and an Additional Driven Intermediate Tunnel portal, with each site meticulously planned to ensure seamless construction operations.
The tunnel itself, boasting a diameter of 13.6 meters, is being dug using three TBMs, with the remainder of the excavation employing the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM). This intricate process is being executed with precision, with the deepest point of the tunnel reaching 114 meters below the Parsik Hill near Shilphata.
Despite the challenges posed by the project, including controlled blasting to minimize environmental impact and the management of excavated materials, NHSRCL engineers remain committed to ensuring minimal disruption to surrounding areas.
Efforts are also underway to develop essential infrastructure, including Gantry Cranes, labor colonies, and site offices, to support the burgeoning workforce of over 600 individuals currently engaged in the project.
Additionally, progress is being made on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train terminus at BKC, with construction underway using the ‘bottom-up method’ to excavate to a depth of 32 meters and lay the foundation for the station.
As the project advances, it is poised to transform the landscape of inter-city travel in India, ushering in an era of high-speed connectivity and bolstering infrastructure development across the region.
