New Delhi: Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar on Thursday dismissed a privilege notice against Union Home Minister Amit Shah, citing a 1948 government press release that backed Shah’s statement regarding a Congress leader’s role in managing the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF).

The notice had been filed after Shah’s remarks during a debate on the Disaster Management Bill, 2024 in Rajya Sabha on March 25. The Home Minister had stated that a Congress leader was once part of the fund’s management, a claim that sparked controversy. However, when asked to authenticate his statement, Shah cited an official 1948 press release as evidence, reinforcing his argument.

In his ruling, Dhankhar said there was no case for breach of privilege, as the Home Minister had provided documentary proof to support his claims. This move effectively ended the opposition’s efforts to challenge Shah’s statement, further intensifying the political debate over the history and administration of PMNRF.
