Delhi: The Union government on Thursday highlighted significant progress in its rural housing mission, announcing that close to three crore homes have already been completed under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana–Gramin (PMAY-G). Out of a cumulative allocation exceeding four crore houses for states and Union Territories, the majority have either been approved or constructed, reflecting steady momentum towards the goal of universal rural housing.
PMAY-G, one of the government’s flagship welfare initiatives, seeks to ensure “Housing for All” by providing durable homes with basic amenities to families living without shelter or in unsafe structures in rural India. The scheme now aims to deliver nearly five crore permanent houses by 2029 through convergence with sanitation, electricity, drinking water, and livelihood programmes.
Originally, the programme targeted the construction of just under three crore homes by March 2024. However, recognising the growing demand for housing due to an increase in rural households, the Union Cabinet approved an extension in August 2024 to support the construction of an additional two crore houses between 2024–25 and 2028–29, according to the Ministry of Rural Development.
The government also underlined progress under the PM-JANMAN initiative, which focuses on saturating Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group (PVTG) households with essential services. Housing support for these communities is being provided through PMAY-G, strengthening outreach in remote and tribal regions.
In addition, the Centre reiterated its commitment to rural livelihoods through the Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana–National Rural Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NRLM). A key component of the programme, the Lakhpati Didi initiative, aims to create three crore financially independent rural women by enabling them to earn at least ₹1 lakh annually through entrepreneurship and self-employment.
