Nitish Kumar with son Nishant Kumar as Bihar politics heats up over possible Rajya Sabha move

Patna: Speculation around the political future of Nishant Kumar, son of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, is once again gaining momentum, with recent developments fuelling fresh debate across the state’s political circles. While Nishant has so far stayed away from active politics, signals from within the Janata Dal (United) suggest growing pressure for him to step into a public role.

The latest round of discussion began after reports highlighted Nishant Kumar’s interest in development-related activities in and around Bakhtiyarpur, a town near Patna that holds personal significance for the Chief Minister. Nitish Kumar was born and raised in Bakhtiyarpur, and any political activity linked to the area is closely watched by party workers and observers alike. Nishant recently visited the town to attend a private event after Makar Sankranti, a visit that many within the JD(U) saw as politically meaningful.

Senior leaders of the ruling party have openly spoken about the demand from grassroots workers. JD(U) working president Sanjay Kumar Jha recently stated that party supporters across Bihar want Nishant Kumar to take on organisational responsibilities. Echoing similar views, state party chief Umesh Kushwaha said that there is widespread belief within the party that Nishant can carry forward his father’s vision of governance based on development and social justice.

According to Kushwaha, the party views Nishant as well-educated and capable of leading a new generation of leadership. He added that many workers see him as someone who could continue Nitish Kumar’s development model and ideological framework. However, Kushwaha also made it clear that the final decision rests entirely with Nishant, stressing that he is free to choose his own path.

Opposition parties, meanwhile, have interpreted the situation differently. Congress leaders have claimed that internal divisions within the JD(U) are driving the push for Nishant’s political entry. Party spokesperson Asit Nath Tiwari alleged that a power struggle is underway, with different groups attempting to influence Nishant’s future for their own advantage.

The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) has gone a step further, suggesting that the debate reflects deeper tensions within the ruling alliance. RJD spokesperson Ejya Yadav claimed that competing power centres within the JD(U), along with pressure from administrative circles, are shaping the narrative around Nishant’s entry into politics.
