Mumbai: Tension escalated in Mumbai on Tuesday as senior police officials, including DCP Zone 1 Pravin Munde, reached Azad Maidan to vacate the protest site where Maratha reservation activist Manoj Jarange Patil has been staging a hunger strike. A large number of his supporters also gathered at the ground, raising slogans in his support.

The development came hours after Mumbai Police served a notice to Patil, accusing him of violating the terms and conditions laid down by the court and law enforcement authorities for holding the demonstration. The Azad Maidan Police further issued a formal notice to Patil’s core committee, directing them to vacate the premises immediately.

Jarange Patil, who has become the face of the Maratha reservation agitation in Maharashtra, has refused to call off his strike despite repeated appeals from political leaders and government authorities. His supporters say the protest will not end until concrete assurances are given on the quota issue.
