New Delhi: A new political storm has erupted after Indian Railways began printing tickets featuring a photograph of Prime Minister Narendra Modi alongside a tribute to ‘Operation Sindoor’ — the recent military mission credited for eliminating key terror threats. While the government says the move is a gesture to honour India’s armed forces, the Opposition has slammed it as an attempt to politicise military valour.

The controversy was ignited when Madhya Pradesh Leader of the Opposition, Umang Singhar, posted a photo of a railway ticket carrying the PM’s image on social media platform X (formerly Twitter). “Even the valour of the Army is being sold like a product for political gains,” Singhar alleged. “Here’s a fresh example of how the Central government has become advertisement-dependent. Operation Sindoor is being used as a tool for the Prime Minister’s promotion.”

He further accused PM Modi of aligning with BJP leaders in Madhya Pradesh who have previously been criticised for politicising military achievements. “Until now, only BJP leaders from Madhya Pradesh were disrespecting the Army, but now even the Prime Minister has joined their ranks,” Singhar stated.

Responding to the allegations, the Railway Ministry strongly defended the initiative, stating that the display of PM Modi saluting soldiers was a “national tribute” rather than a political promotion. “The hon’ble Prime Minister salutes the heroes of Operation Sindoor and celebrates its success,” said Dilip Kumar, Executive Director of Information and Publicity, Railway Board, in a statement to news agency.

Kumar explained that Indian Railways launched a nationwide campaign to commemorate the operation. Stations like New Delhi, Jammu, Pathankot, and Srinagar were decorated with patriotic themes, including military camouflage motifs on benches and platforms. “Top stations across the country were beautifully decorated with the tricolour. In several divisions, schoolchildren participated in painting competitions centred around the theme of Operation Sindoor,” he said.
