Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday began a significant three-country diplomatic tour, visiting Jordan, Ethiopia and Oman, aimed at strengthening India’s strategic partnerships and deepening political, economic and people-to-people ties.

In his departure statement, the Prime Minister said India shares deep-rooted civilisational links as well as strong modern-day relations with all three nations. The visit, he noted, would focus on expanding cooperation in areas of mutual interest and reinforcing India’s engagement with West Asia and Africa.

The first leg of the tour takes PM Modi to Jordan, where he is visiting at the invitation of King Abdullah II ibn Al Hussein. The visit coincides with the completion of 75 years of diplomatic relations between India and Jordan. During his stay in Amman, the Prime Minister is scheduled to hold extensive talks with King Abdullah II, Prime Minister Jafar Hassan and Crown Prince Al Hussein bin Abdullah II. He will also interact with members of the Indian community, acknowledging their role in strengthening bilateral ties.

From Jordan, PM Modi will travel to Ethiopia, marking the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the country in over a decade. Invited by Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali, Modi’s visit comes at a time when India is expanding its engagement with Africa. Addis Ababa, which hosts the African Union headquarters, holds special significance following the African Union’s inclusion as a permanent member of the G20 during India’s presidency. The Prime Minister will hold bilateral talks and address a joint session of the Ethiopian Parliament, highlighting India’s democratic journey and cooperation with the Global South. He will also meet the Indian diaspora in Ethiopia.

The final leg of the tour will take the Prime Minister to Oman, his second visit to the country. India and Oman are marking 70 years of diplomatic relations this year. In Muscat, PM Modi will hold high-level discussions with the Sultan of Oman, focusing on strengthening the strategic partnership, trade and economic cooperation. He will also address the Indian community, recognising their contribution to Oman’s development and bilateral relations.
