Port of Spain: In a historic address during his first bilateral visit to Trinidad and Tobago, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached out to the Indian-origin community, urging them to reconnect with their roots by visiting India, the land of their forefathers. The event saw an enthusiastic gathering of the Indian diaspora, where PM Modi was welcomed warmly by his Trinidadian counterpart, Kamla Persad-Bissessar.

In a heartfelt speech, Modi said, “I encourage all of you to visit India not just virtually but in person. Visit the villages of your ancestors, walk the soil they once walked on. Bring your children and neighbours — bring anyone who enjoys ‘chai’ and a good story. We will welcome you with open arms, warm hearts, and jalebi.”

Highlighting the cultural and emotional ties that bind the Indian diaspora to their heritage, PM Modi praised the resilience and pride of Indian-origin communities abroad. “Kamla ji’s ancestors hailed from Buxar in Bihar, and she herself has visited the land. People in India proudly consider her a daughter of Bihar,” he remarked, drawing applause from the audience.

Modi also referenced India’s rich cultural and spiritual traditions, including the Mahakumbh, which he described as the world’s largest spiritual congregation. He presented sacred water from the Sarayu River and urged PM Bissessar to offer it at Ganga Dhara, a symbolic site for the Indian diaspora in the Caribbean. “This water carries the blessings of millions. Let it merge with your faith here,” he said.

In a major policy announcement, the Prime Minister declared that individuals of Indian origin in Trinidad and Tobago, up to the sixth generation, would now be eligible for Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cards. This move will allow them to live, work, and study in India without restrictions.

“India doesn’t just remember you — India celebrates you. We are not connected only by lineage or surname. We are connected by a sense of belonging. India welcomes, and India embraces you,” said Modi.
