Air India Under Fire for Pressuring Victims’ Kin After Deadly Ahmedabad-London Crash

Ahmedabad: In the aftermath of the tragic crash of Air India Flight AI-171, which claimed 241 lives, families of the victims are now leveling serious accusations against the airline. Grieving relatives have alleged that Air India is pressuring them into signing legal documents that could affect their right to fair compensation.

The crash, which occurred just minutes after takeoff from Ahmedabad en route to London, is among the deadliest in Indian aviation history. While investigations into the cause are still underway, the focus has now shifted to how the airline is handling victims’ families.

A prominent UK-based legal firm, Stewarts, in collaboration with Ahmedabad’s Nanavati and Nanavati, is representing over 40 affected families. The lawyers have accused Air India of deploying coercive tactics to rush victims’ kin into filling out complex legal questionnaires, under the implied threat of losing out on any compensation.

“These families are still mourning. To ask them to complete legally dense documents without explanation, and under pressure, is unethical,” said a representative from Stewarts. “Some were made to fill these forms outdoors in scorching heat, without legal guidance or clarity on the implications of their responses.”

According to the legal teams, the questionnaires include requests for sensitive financial data and demand the disclosure of how much the victim supported their family financially. Lawyers fear the information could be used strategically to minimize liability and limit future compensation payouts.

Families also reported being misled about the purpose of the forms, with many believing it was simply a procedural step for immediate relief payments. In reality, lawyers argue, these documents may have significant legal consequences if used to negotiate settlements or reduce claims.

“We’re advising all families not to sign or submit anything until proper legal advice is provided,” Stewarts said, adding that they are exploring legal action not only against Air India, but also Boeing, the aircraft’s manufacturer, and other potentially liable entities.
