Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to preside over a crucial meeting of the Union Council of Ministers at Sewa Teerth in New Delhi on Thursday evening, in what is being seen as a major review of the government’s performance midway through its current term.
According to reports, the high-level gathering will bring together Union Cabinet ministers, ministers of state with independent charge and ministers of state to discuss governance priorities, policy implementation and emerging economic challenges.
Government Expected to Review Economic and Policy Challenges
The meeting comes at a time when concerns over rising fuel prices and global energy security have intensified due to geopolitical tensions in West Asia and disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important oil transit corridors.
Officials familiar with the discussions said the Centre is likely to review the impact of international developments on India’s economy, including inflationary pressures linked to global crude oil prices.
Recently, petrol and diesel prices were increased for the second time within a week across several Indian cities. In Delhi, petrol prices climbed to ₹98.64 per litre, while diesel rates rose to ₹91.58 per litre. Similar increases were reported in Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata amid continuing volatility in global oil markets.
The latest price revision followed an earlier hike announced on May 15, as crude prices remained elevated due to tensions involving the United States, Israel and Iran earlier this year.
PM Modi Pushes Fuel Conservation and Sustainable Transport
Amid concerns over energy supply and import dependence, PM Modi has recently urged citizens to contribute towards economic resilience by reducing fuel consumption and adopting sustainable transport practices.
The Prime Minister encouraged greater use of public transportation, carpooling and railway-based freight movement while also promoting electric vehicles as part of India’s long-term clean energy transition strategy.
Government officials believe reducing dependence on imported fossil fuels remains critical for economic stability during periods of global uncertainty.
Meeting Comes After Modi’s Five-Nation Diplomatic Tour
The ministers’ meeting is also taking place shortly after PM Modi returned from a five-nation overseas visit that included stops in the United Arab Emirates, Netherlands, Sweden, Norway and Italy.
One of the major highlights of the tour was Modi’s meeting with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in Rome, where the two countries agreed to elevate bilateral ties to a “Special Strategic Partnership.”
During the discussions, India and Italy reviewed progress under the Joint Strategic Action Plan 2025–2029 and explored cooperation in sectors including trade, investment, defence manufacturing, technology, education, connectivity and the blue economy.
Midterm Review Seen as Politically Significant
Political observers view Thursday’s meeting as an important strategic exercise for the Modi government as it assesses policy delivery, economic management and administrative coordination amid changing global and domestic conditions.
