Delhi: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee launched a sharp attack on the Election Commission on Monday after boycotting a scheduled meeting at the poll body’s office in Delhi. Standing outside the Election Commission premises, Banerjee accused the constitutional authority of acting with bias and disrespect towards opposition parties.

Questioning the role of the Election Commission, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief asked whether the poll body was trying to decide the government even before elections are held. She said that while the ruling party may have power at the Centre, her party draws strength from the people. According to her, this imbalance was clearly visible in the way the meeting was handled.

Mamata Banerjee said the decision to boycott the meeting was taken because she and her delegation felt insulted and humiliated. She alleged that the Election Commission officials behaved arrogantly and adopted a deliberately hostile attitude during interactions with them. “The way we were treated was unacceptable. There was no respect, no intention to listen,” she said.

The West Bengal Chief Minister further claimed that her party had sent multiple written communications to the Election Commission but received no response. She stated that five formal letters were submitted raising serious concerns, yet none were acknowledged or answered. According to her, this silence reflects a lack of accountability.

Banerjee also accused the Election Commission of spreading misinformation. She alleged that statements made by officials during briefings were misleading and untrue. “What they are saying now is full of lies. Everything being presented is junk,” she remarked, expressing strong dissatisfaction with the explanations given after the meeting.

Expressing disappointment, Mamata Banerjee said she had expected fairness and justice from an independent constitutional body. Instead, she claimed that injustice was being done under the guise of procedure. She warned that her party was closely watching the actions of the Election Commission and would continue to raise its voice against what it sees as institutional bias.
