As Pakistan gears up for a pivotal election day, the Ministry of Interior has taken unprecedented steps to maintain order and security across the nation. In a bid to preempt any potential disturbances, internet services have been suspended countrywide, marking a significant move by the authorities.
The decision comes alongside the deployment of a staggering 650,000 security forces in various regions, underlining the gravity of the security concerns surrounding the electoral process.
Reports from local media indicate that Pakistan’s Interior Ministry has also temporarily suspended mobile services throughout the country, citing a deteriorating security situation as the rationale behind the move.
On Thursday, a vast electorate of nearly 13 crore Pakistanis will cast their votes, not only determining the nation’s next government but also shaping the legislatures of its four provinces. However, concerns loom over the anticipated low voter turnout, attributed in part to the absence of popular leader and former Prime Minister, Imran Khan, who is currently incarcerated.
Voting is scheduled to commence promptly at 8 a.m. (03:00 GMT) and will continue unabated until 5 p.m. (12:00 GMT). Authorities have ensured that individuals already in line by the closing time will be allowed to cast their ballots, with provisions in place to extend voting hours if necessary due to violence or disruptions at certain polling stations.
The counting of votes will commence immediately after polls close, with preliminary results expected to be announced within hours of the conclusion of voting.
Pakistan’s political landscape is characterized by the dominance of three major parties: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP). However, a total of forty-four political parties are participating in these elections, reflecting the diverse political spectrum of the country.
