New Delhi: In the wake of the tragic Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 28 lives on April 22, political leaders from across party lines have come together to demand swift and decisive action against terrorism and terror camps. The call for unity came as the Opposition flagged security lapses in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam, while government officials acknowledged it as a “lapse.”

During a crucial meeting between the government and Opposition leaders, concerns were raised about the absence of security forces at Baisaran Meadows, the site of the attack. According to Opposition sources, the government explained that local authorities had not informed them prior to opening the tourist spot near Pahalgam in Anantnag district. In response, Union Home Minister Amit Shah reportedly clarified that no police permission had been granted for tourists to visit Baisaran Meadows, as reported by The Hindu.

The meeting, which lasted nearly two hours, delved into security details, with Shah revealing that 500 security personnel were stationed in Pahalgam on the day of the attack. However, it took the security forces almost 45 minutes to reach the location of the attack. Shah also mentioned that no communication signals were detected within a 50-km radius of Baisaran Meadows for at least five days before the assault.

Following the discussions, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju assured the media that all political parties stood united in their support for the government’s efforts to combat terrorism. “All political parties have given this message, and their leaders have expressed unanimous support for the steps the government plans to take,” Rijiju said.

Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, also reaffirmed the Opposition’s full backing, stating that everyone at the meeting strongly condemned the attack. He added, “The Opposition has extended full support to the government in taking any necessary action.”
