A day after the Opposition’s no-confidence motion against him was defeated in Parliament, Om Birla resumed his duties as Speaker of the Lok Sabha on Thursday.
In his first remarks after returning to the Chair, Birla defended his conduct and said he had always carried out his responsibilities with fairness and impartiality while ensuring that Members of Parliament get an opportunity to speak according to established parliamentary rules.
Speaker Defends His Conduct
Addressing the House, Om Birla said he had consistently tried to maintain neutrality while presiding over proceedings in the Lok Sabha.
He emphasised that the role of the Speaker is to uphold the dignity of Parliament and ensure debates take place within the framework of established procedures.
Birla also said he has always attempted to give members from all parties an opportunity to express their views during parliamentary discussions.
According to him, maintaining fairness and discipline in the House remains the core responsibility of the Speaker.
No-Confidence Motion Defeated in Lok Sabha
The Opposition had moved a no-confidence motion against Om Birla, accusing him of favouring the ruling party during parliamentary proceedings.
However, the motion was defeated in the Lok Sabha after the ruling alliance used its numerical strength in the House to block the attempt.
The debate on the motion saw heated exchanges between treasury benches and Opposition leaders, with several ruling party members defending the Speaker and criticising the motion as politically motivated.
The defeat of the motion effectively ended a rare parliamentary confrontation over the functioning of the Speaker’s office.
Emphasis on Parliamentary Rules
After resuming the Chair, Om Birla stressed that parliamentary proceedings must strictly follow established rules to maintain order and discipline in the House.
He noted that ensuring equal opportunity for debate while maintaining decorum remains one of the key responsibilities of the Speaker.
Birla also reiterated that the smooth functioning of Parliament depends on cooperation from all members regardless of political differences.
With the motion now defeated, the Lok Sabha is expected to focus on its legislative agenda and resume regular parliamentary business.
