“Nothing Will Happen to Him”: Key Accused Monojit Mishra Was ‘Terror for Students’, Known for ‘Sexual Violence & Political Impunity

Kolkata: New and deeply disturbing details have come to light about Monojit Mishra, infamously known on campus as “Mango,” the prime accused in the horrific gang rape of a 24-year-old law student at South Calcutta Law College on June 25. According to multiple accounts cited by The Times of India, Mishra has long terrorised the college community, allegedly operating unchecked thanks to his political backing and the fear he inspired among students and staff.

A college insider quoted by TOI described Mishra as being obsessed with sexual exploitation, going so far as to morph women’s photos, record intimate videos, and share them with his circle. “He had a tendency to record videos of almost everything,” the source revealed.

Shockingly, Mishra, who had worked as an ad-hoc staffer after graduating from the same college, was already the subject of numerous complaints of molestation, harassment, assault, and extortion — yet no meaningful action was taken. “The college authorities knew everything and gave full support to Mango. This wasn’t a stray incident. A proper sexual harassment complaint was submitted, but no action followed. No one at this college is safe,” a third-year student told TOI.

Further allegations point to Mishra’s brazen intimidation of those who opposed him, including participants in last year’s ‘Reclaim the Night’ protest. According to students, he openly flaunted links to the Trinamool Congress, confidently boasting that “nothing will happen to him.”

In the aftermath of the survivor’s harrowing ordeal, the Kolkata Police has constituted a five-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to pursue the case. An officer involved in the probe said CCTV evidence from June 25, covering the time between 3:30 PM and 10:50 PM, appears to corroborate the survivor’s testimony. “The footage shows the movements of the three accused, the security guard, and the victim. It confirms the girl’s allegations,” the officer confirmed.

Investigators believe the crime may have been triggered by the survivor’s rejection of a marriage proposal from Mishra.

Public anger has erupted across Kolkata, with protests gaining momentum. BJP leaders, including Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar, were detained on Thursday as they tried to march towards the college in solidarity with the survivor.
