New Delhi: Amid ongoing tensions along the border, the Indian Army on Saturday clarified that no Director General of Military Operations (DGMO)-level talks with Pakistan are scheduled for today, May 18, but reaffirmed that the existing ceasefire agreement remains in force without any expiry date.

A senior Army official confirmed to News18, “No DGMO talks are scheduled today. As far as a continuation of a break in hostilities, as decided in the DGMO interaction of May 12 is concerned, there is no expiry date to it.”

The clarification follows a period of heightened cross-border tension, triggered by the Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir earlier this month that claimed 26 lives. In response, India launched ‘Operation Sindoor’, a strategic military action targeting terror-linked sites across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).

Though a ceasefire was reaffirmed on May 10 following a phone call from Pakistan’s DGMO to his Indian counterpart Lt Gen Rajiv Ghai, fresh violations soon surfaced. Pakistani forces reportedly opened fire across multiple stretches of the International Border and Line of Control (LoC), affecting key areas in Srinagar, Punjab, and Rajasthan.

India, in turn, issued a stern warning, making it clear that any future breaches would be met with firm retaliation.

The most recent DGMO-level engagement was held on May 12 at 5:00 PM, where both sides reiterated the importance of maintaining peace and refraining from provocative actions. “The focus was on ensuring that neither side initiates hostilities or resorts to aggression,” the Indian Army noted in a post-meeting statement.

Despite sporadic infractions, Indian defence officials believe that the open lines of communication are critical to managing escalations and preventing a wider conflict. The ceasefire pact—originally brokered in 2003 and reaffirmed intermittently over the years—remains a crucial diplomatic tool amid fluctuating relations.
