Lok Sabha debate over no-confidence motion against Speaker Om Birla

A dramatic debate unfolded in the Lok Sabha after the Opposition moved a no-confidence motion against Speaker Om Birla. The discussion quickly turned intense as leaders from both the government and Opposition traded sharp remarks during the proceedings.

Members raised questions about parliamentary conduct, the role of the Speaker, and the functioning of the House, turning the debate into one of the most heated parliamentary exchanges in recent months.

Why Did the Opposition Bring the Motion?
The Opposition maintained that the motion was not a personal attack but an attempt to protect the dignity of Parliament.

Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi said the resolution was introduced as a responsibility toward maintaining parliamentary standards.

According to him, future parliamentary research might reveal an unusual statistic.

“In future when there will be research on parliamentary records, statistics will tell that Kiren Rijiju was the Parliamentary Affairs Minister who interrupted the Opposition the most,” Gogoi said during the debate.
The remark triggered reactions from the treasury benches.

Amit Shah’s Sharp Response
Responding to the Opposition criticism, Union Home Minister Amit Shah countered the allegation in the House.

Shah said he partly agreed with Gogoi’s observation but added that the Opposition’s behaviour had also been unprecedented.

“I agree, Kiren Rijiju ji as Parliamentary Affairs Minister has interrupted the most. But we have also never seen such an irresponsible Opposition,” Shah said.
His comment drew strong reactions from Opposition MPs, further intensifying the debate.

How Much Time Has Been Allotted for the Debate?
During the proceedings, BJP MP Jagdambika Pal, who was presiding over the session, clarified the procedure.

He announced that 10 hours had been allotted for the debate and asked members to remain focused on the resolution. Pal also said that the Speaker had been generous in allowing the Opposition to bring forward the motion and follow parliamentary procedures.

What Are the Opposition’s Constitutional Concerns?
Congress MP K. C. Venugopal raised another issue during the debate, pointing out that the government had not appointed a Deputy Speaker for several years.

Venugopal argued that this situation had created a constitutional vacuum and urged the House to elect someone to preside over the proceedings while the resolution is discussed.

Government Rejects Opposition Allegations
Senior BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad dismissed the Opposition’s arguments.

He said the objections raised against the Speaker were “baseless and politically motivated.” According to him, the Speaker has always ensured that the House functions according to parliamentary rules.

What Happens Next?
The debate on the no-confidence motion is expected to continue through the allotted hours, with several MPs from both sides scheduled to speak. The outcome of the discussion could become a major political moment in the ongoing parliamentary session.

The confrontation also reflects the deepening divide between the ruling alliance and the Opposition over the functioning of Parliament and procedural fairness.
