New Delhi: Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari announced on Wednesday that the government will soon introduce a new policy on toll charges for national highways, providing reasonable concessions to consumers while ensuring sustainable road infrastructure development.
Addressing the Rajya Sabha, Gadkari defended the necessity of toll charges, stating, “When you want good roads, you have to pay for it. The government is investing heavily in infrastructure, and toll revenue is essential to maintain and expand road networks.”
The minister highlighted the ambitious ₹3 lakh crore investment planned for road infrastructure in Assam, including four-lane and six-lane highways and multiple bridges over the Brahmaputra River. He assured that tolls are only levied on four-lane highways, not on two-lane paved shoulder roads.
Gadkari also addressed concerns regarding the location of toll plazas. As per the 2008 regulations, toll plazas cannot be set up within 60 kilometers of each other on the same highway stretch, barring exceptions. He assured lawmakers that the new toll policy would address existing concerns and eliminate public debate on the issue.
“After this session, we will announce the new toll policy, which will resolve problems and provide reasonable concessions to consumers,” Gadkari stated.
