Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has clarified that the bridge collapse in Bihar’s Araria district, which occurred on Tuesday, was not constructed under the Union Road Transport and Highways Ministry. According to Gadkari, the project was overseen by the Rural Development Ministry of the Bihar government.

In a statement posted on social media platform X, Gadkari’s office stated, “The bridge that collapsed in Araria, Bihar was not constructed under the Union Road Transport Ministry. Its work was going on under the Rural Development Ministry of the Bihar Government.”

The collapse of the 183-meter-long bridge, which was expected to open to traffic soon, marks the seventh such incident in Bihar since 2023 and the second this year alone.

Araria district magistrate Inayat Khan confirmed that there were no casualties resulting from the collapse. “It was not operational as the approach road was not complete… Hence no casualty has been reported,” Khan explained to HT over the phone. She further mentioned that a technical team has been dispatched to investigate the cause of the collapse.

The bridge was under construction over the Bakra river near Parharia Ghat in the district’s Sikti block, situated on the Araria-Kishanganj road. The project, with an estimated cost of ₹7.79 crore, aimed to shorten travel time between Araria and Kishanganj districts, enhancing mobility for residents in the Sikti and Kursakanta blocks.
