Nitish Kumar with son Nishant Kumar as Bihar politics heats up over possible Rajya Sabha move

Political activity in Bihar has intensified following speculation that Bihar Chief Minister and Janata Dal (United) president Nitish Kumar may shift to the Rajya Sabha. The discussion gained momentum after the BJP announced his name for the Upper House, triggering reactions from leaders across the political spectrum.

Among the first to respond was Pappu Yadav, chief of the Jan Adhikar Party and a prominent political figure in the state. He publicly backed Nitish Kumar as the strongest Chief Ministerial face within the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). Yadav stated that there is no better option than Nitish Kumar to lead Bihar at this stage.

He further added that if Nitish Kumar decides to step aside, his son Nishant Kumar could be considered for the role. Nishant, who has largely stayed away from active politics until recently, has now begun making limited public appearances, sparking debate about his possible political future. Yadav described him as calm, well-mannered and capable of shaping Bihar’s future.

Rajya Sabha Move Under Discussion

Earlier, Bihar Parliamentary Affairs Minister Vijay Kumar Chaudhary confirmed that discussions are ongoing about Nitish Kumar contesting the Rajya Sabha election. He clarified that no final decision has been announced and that the Chief Minister himself will take the call.

The Rajya Sabha is the Upper House of India’s Parliament, where members represent states and review, debate and pass national legislation.

Speculation suggests that if Nitish Kumar moves to Delhi, the BJP — a key partner in the NDA — may seek to lead the Bihar government. However, no official announcement has been made regarding any leadership transition.

Rajya Sabha Nominations Deadline Near

The political buzz has grown as nominations for five Rajya Sabha seats from Bihar close today. The BJP has declared candidates for two seats and extended support to ally Upendra Kushwaha. The JD(U), which currently holds two of the seats, has not officially announced its nominees.

There is also uncertainty over whether Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh will be renominated or if new faces will be introduced.

Nishant’s Political Role Still Unclear

While Nishant Kumar’s increased visibility has triggered discussion, the Janata Dal (United) has not formally declared a specific political role for him. Party leaders have indicated that any decision regarding his responsibilities will be taken by the leadership at an appropriate time.

As developments unfold, Bihar remains focused on Nitish Kumar’s next move. Whether he continues as Chief Minister or transitions to the Rajya Sabha, the decision is expected to significantly impact the state’s political direction in the coming months.
