New York: An Indian citizen has pleaded guilty in a United States federal court to charges linked to an alleged murder-for-hire conspiracy targeting a US-based Sikh separatist leader in New York City. The case, which has drawn international attention, was heard in Manhattan, where the accused acknowledged his involvement before a magistrate judge.

According to the United States Department of Justice, 54-year-old Nikhil Gupta admitted to charges including conspiracy to commit murder-for-hire and money laundering. Prosecutors stated that he faces a potential prison term of up to 40 years, with sentencing scheduled for May 29, 2026.

Court filings describe the intended victim as a US citizen of Indian origin who is a lawyer and political activist based in New York. Though official documents refer to the individual as “the victim,” the person is widely identified as Gurpatwant Singh Pannun. Pannun has been designated a terrorist under India’s Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, with Indian authorities alleging his involvement in promoting secessionist activities linked to the Khalistan movement.

US prosecutors allege that in 2023, Gupta was approached by an individual described in court papers as an employee associated with India’s external intelligence framework. Acting on instructions, Gupta allegedly attempted to arrange the killing by contacting intermediaries who, unbeknownst to him, were cooperating with US law enforcement agencies.

Investigators claim Gupta negotiated a payment of $100,000 for the planned assassination and arranged an advance of $15,000. Authorities further allege that he provided sensitive personal information about the intended target, including contact details and movement patterns. The plot was ultimately disrupted through coordinated efforts by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Drug Enforcement Administration.

Gupta was arrested in the Czech Republic in June 2023 and later extradited to the United States in 2024 to face trial. The case has added strain to diplomatic conversations, though the Indian government previously stated it was examining the matter through a high-level internal review mechanism and reiterated that it does not support unlawful actions abroad.
