Kolkata: A special court of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Wednesday handed down a 10-year rigorous imprisonment (RI) sentence to Sayyad M Idris, a key accused in a Pakistan-linked case involving recruitment and radicalisation of youth for the banned terrorist outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) in West Bengal.

The accused, hailing from Uttara Kannada district in Karnataka, was convicted under multiple provisions of the Indian Penal Code as well as the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). The NIA court clarified that the maximum sentence awarded is 10 years RI, and the punishment is to run concurrently across the charges.

In addition to imprisonment, the court imposed a fine of Rs 70,000 on Idris. The verdict was delivered by the NIA special court in Kolkata, which has been hearing cases related to terror financing, recruitment, and radicalisation linked to Pakistan-based terror groups.

The case highlighted the ongoing efforts by the NIA to crack down on terror recruitment networks, particularly those targeting vulnerable youth in India. Investigations revealed that Idris played a central role in recruiting and radicalising Muslim youth to join LeT, which is a proscribed terrorist organisation in India.

The sentencing comes as part of a larger crackdown on terror modules operating across multiple states, underlining the government’s commitment to dismantling networks that promote extremism and threaten national security.
