Chennai: The tragic suicide of a 21-year-old NEET aspirant, Devadarshini, in Tamil Nadu has reignited a political controversy, with the opposition AIADMK blaming the ruling DMK government for failing to address student distress over the medical entrance exam.

Leader of the Opposition and AIADMK chief Edappadi K Palaniswami launched a scathing attack on the DMK, accusing it of betraying students by failing to fulfill its promise of scrapping NEET in the state. “The blood of these aspirants is in the hands of the ruling dispensation. The DMK, in alliance with the Congress, introduced NEET and took it to the Supreme Court, destroying the medical dreams of Tamil Nadu students. Now, they are silent over these tragic deaths,” Palaniswami said in a post on social media platform X.

Devadarshini, a resident of Chennai, was preparing for her fourth attempt at the NEET exam, scheduled for May. She had failed the exam three times before and was under immense pressure to clear it. According to police reports, she had expressed deep anxiety over her repeated failures and the financial burden on her family.

On Thursday, she confided in her father about her fears after returning from her NEET coaching class. Despite his reassurance, she remained troubled. The next morning, after assisting her parents at their bakery, she went home, claiming she needed to use the washroom. When she did not return or respond to calls, her parents rushed home, only to find her dead by suicide.

A police investigation is ongoing, and an autopsy has been conducted before handing over the body to her family.

The incident has added fuel to the long-standing debate over NEET in Tamil Nadu. The DMK, which had vowed to abolish the exam, continues to face criticism from opposition parties and students’ families. While AIADMK blames the ruling party for failing to act, the DMK has yet to respond to the latest accusations.

With emotions running high, Devadarshini’s death has once again highlighted the intense pressure faced by medical aspirants in the state, raising urgent questions about mental health support and policy changes for students navigating the competitive exam system.
