Rekha Sharma, the chairperson of the National Commission for Women (NCW), has strongly criticized a US-based writer for disparaging India on social media following the harrowing gangrape of a Spanish woman in Dumka. David Josef Volodzko, the writer in question, took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to express his concerns about the safety of women in India, recounting instances of sexual aggression he purportedly witnessed during his time in the country.
Volodzko’s social media post sparked controversy as he painted a grim picture of India’s safety for solo women travelers, citing personal anecdotes and incidents he claimed to have encountered. However, his remarks drew sharp condemnation from NCW chief Rekha Sharma, who questioned the veracity of the incidents mentioned and criticized Volodzko for not reporting them to the authorities.
In response to Volodzko’s post, Sharma emphasized the importance of responsible behavior and urged individuals to refrain from tarnishing the reputation of an entire nation based on anecdotal experiences shared on social media. She highlighted the need for concrete action, such as reporting incidents to the police, rather than merely resorting to online commentary.
Meanwhile, Volodzko’s narrative gained traction as he shared additional accounts of alleged misconduct, including an incident where he claimed a male acquaintance groped a female friend during an introduction. His remarks reignited debates about safety and gender-based violence in India, prompting mixed reactions from social media users.
The controversy surrounding Volodzko’s post coincided with the disturbing gangrape of a Spanish woman in Dumka, Jharkhand, further exacerbating concerns about women’s safety in the country. The victim, traveling with her Brazilian husband on a motorcycle tour of South Asia, fell prey to a brutal attack by seven men while camping in a forest in Dumka. The assailants not only raped the woman but also assaulted her husband before fleeing the scene with their belongings.
