If the Governor does not cancel degree exams of students across the state, students will come out in protest against Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari, threatens Adv Amol Matele, president of NCP student wing
Mumbai: The controversial issue of final year examination of degree courses has taken a new twist, the student’s wing of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) on Saturday dashed off an Email to Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari requesting him on cancellation of the final- year examinations of degree courses. The NCP union student union wing in its letter has threatened to the Governor Koshyari that if examinations are not cancelled, they will protest against him.
Advocate Amol Matele, President of Student’s wing of Mumbai (NCP) , said that due to the Coronavirus crisis they had requested Minister of Higher Education and Technical Education, Uday Samant for cancellation of final year examinations of degree courses. He alleged that due to opposition, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) the decision of online examinations is emphasized on them now. However, the online examinations in comparison with Oxford and Cambridge Universities cannot take place as many students are not well equipped to appear for this kind of online university examinations.
Recently, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray had announced that final year degree college examinations will not be conducted and all the students will be deemed to have passed. However, Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari showed his displeasure over the decision stating that the state government has acted arbitrarily in the matter. Governor Koshyari in a strongly worded letter reminded CM Thackeray that as the Chancellor of Universities in Maharashtra he is the final authority to decide on whether examinations should be called off or not.

Koshyari had called the government decision as arbitrary citing there cannot be two different criteria – one for those who appeared for exams and another for those who will get average marks based on the previous year’s academic performance.
Advocate Amol Matele, President of Student’s wing of Mumbai NCP said, “About 12 lakh students pan Maharashtra are agitated over the cancellation of final year examination of degree courses. I have requested the governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari to understand the issue erupted due to COVID-19 pandemic. Most of the students are in remote places under lockdown and are not well equipped with online examinations.”
Matele also highlighted that the previous government of BJP had considered online checking of examination papers however later it was revealed that around 35,000 failed due to online checking. Thus, it is necessary for the Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari to understand that online examinations have resulted in controversy leaving the students’ future in the dark.
