In a significant legal maneuver, both sons of former Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif have petitioned the accountability court to suspend their arrest warrants in three corruption references linked to the Panama Papers scandal. According to a report by Dawn, Hussain Nawaz and Hassan Nawaz, represented by their counsel Qazi Misbahul Hassan, have filed an application seeking reprieve from the perpetual arrest warrants issued in the Avenfield Apartments, Al-Azizia, and Flagship Investment references.

Accountability Judge Nasir Javed Rana presided over the hearing of the applications filed by Hussain and Hassan Nawaz.

During the proceedings, the counsel apprised the judge that the brothers are currently residents of Saudi Arabia and the UK, respectively. They were named as accused individuals in these references alongside their father, Nawaz Sharif, sister Maryam Nawaz, and retired Captain Safdar. Advocate Qazi Misbahul Hassan highlighted that the trial proceedings had commenced while both Hussain and Hassan were residing outside Pakistan. He further contended that they were unaware of the legal processes initiated against them, as the state authorities allegedly failed to serve proper notices, arrest warrants, and proclamations.

In their defense, the counsel stated that Hussain and Hassan Nawaz have now resolved to surrender before the court to confront the trial proceedings head-on.

As per the counsel’s submission, the two sons of the former premier are scheduled to arrive in Islamabad on March 12. They have earnestly requested the court to temporarily suspend their arrest warrants to facilitate their appearance and surrender.

It’s noteworthy that Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam Nawaz were both convicted in the Avenfield reference shortly before the previous general election. Additionally, Nawaz Sharif faced conviction in the Al-Azizia reference in December 2018, although he was acquitted in the Flagship Investment reference.

Following their convictions, Nawaz, Maryam, and Captain Safdar challenged their verdicts in the Avenfield reference before the Islamabad High Court. Amidst legal proceedings, Nawaz Sharif left the country, leading the Islamabad High Court to declare him a “proclaimed offender.”

While Sharif resided in the UK, Maryam and Safdar continued to pursue the case, ultimately resulting in the Islamabad High Court overturning their convictions. Nawaz Sharif’s return to Pakistan in October last year saw the revival of his appeals against convictions, eventually leading to the Islamabad High Court setting aside his convictions in both cases as well, as per Dawn’s report.
