PM Modi Sets New Record As India’s Longest-Serving Elected Prime Minister

Modi Reaches Historic Political Milestone

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday etched his name into India’s political history by becoming the country’s longest continuously serving elected Prime Minister.

The milestone was achieved after Modi completed 4,399 uninterrupted days in office, moving past the record previously held by India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru.

The achievement comes more than a decade after Modi first took office in May 2014 and reflects his continued electoral success across three consecutive general elections.

More Than A Decade Of Political Dominance

Since assuming leadership of the Union government in 2014, Modi has led the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) through multiple national victories, helping the party expand its political footprint across regions where it previously had limited influence.

His tenure has coincided with major infrastructure projects, welfare initiatives, digital governance reforms and efforts aimed at strengthening India’s global profile.

Unlike Nehru, whose time in office included years before India’s first general election, Modi’s record pertains entirely to a continuously elected tenure. Former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi served longer overall across separate terms but did not hold office continuously for as many days.

NDA Leaders Prepare To Honour Prime Minister

Leaders of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) are expected to mark the occasion during a gathering of alliance partners, where a resolution recognising Modi’s achievement is likely to be adopted.

The Prime Minister is also expected to be felicitated for his leadership and contributions during his years in office.

Reflecting on the milestone, Modi said, “With the blessings of 1.4 billion fellow citizens and the spirit of nation first, we have spared no effort in empowering our youth, women, and our farmer brothers and sisters. From infrastructure development to the digital revolution, India has gained a new identity on the global stage.”

BJP Credits Governance And Development Agenda

BJP leaders described the achievement as a reflection of public confidence in Modi’s leadership.

Party president Nitin Nabin highlighted initiatives ranging from welfare schemes and housing projects to healthcare expansion, sanitation drives, financial inclusion programmes and economic reforms.

The party also pointed to key political decisions undertaken during Modi’s tenure, including the revocation of Article 370 provisions in Jammu and Kashmir and measures targeting terrorism and left-wing extremism.

Global Leaders Extend Congratulations

The milestone drew reactions from several international leaders who praised Modi’s political longevity and India’s development journey.

Anura Kumara Dissanayake described the achievement as evidence of the trust repeatedly placed in Modi by Indian voters.

Meanwhile, James Marape commended India’s progress under Modi’s leadership, calling the country’s efforts to improve living standards and reduce poverty noteworthy.

A Record-Breaking Chapter In Indian Politics

With the new record, Modi now tops the list of India’s longest continuously serving Prime Ministers, ahead of Nehru, Indira Gandhi, Manmohan Singh and Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

The milestone adds another significant chapter to India’s political history and underscores Modi’s enduring presence at the centre of the country’s governance and electoral landscape.
