Congress Challenge Ends After Nomination Rejected
The contest for Madhya Pradesh’s Rajya Sabha seats took a dramatic turn on Wednesday after election authorities rejected the nomination of Congress candidate Meenakshi Natarajan during scrutiny proceedings.
The development has effectively removed the only obstacle to a complete victory for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which is now set to secure all three seats from the state.
The rejection came after objections were raised regarding the nomination documents submitted by the Congress leader, with scrutiny officials reportedly finding merit in the concerns presented.
BJP’s Third Candidate Set To Enter Rajya Sabha
With the Congress candidate no longer in the fray, BJP nominee Mahesh Kewat is now expected to be elected unopposed.
The BJP had already been comfortably placed to secure two of the three available seats. The latest development has all but guaranteed the party a clean sweep in the election.
Kewat is a long-time BJP functionary known for his association with the party’s organisational structure and ideological network. Over the years, he has worked in various positions linked to the party as well as affiliated organisations.
Veteran Organiser Rewarded With Rajya Sabha Opportunity
Chief Minister Mohan Yadav recently described Kewat as a dedicated grassroots worker who has spent decades serving both the party and social causes.
According to BJP leaders, Kewat’s political journey began at a young age through organisations connected to the Sangh Parivar. He later held several positions within the party’s youth and organisational wings before moving into broader leadership responsibilities.
His public life has also included work related to welfare initiatives for fishing communities, having previously headed the Madhya Pradesh Fishermen Welfare Board.
Objections Over Nomination Papers
The BJP had challenged Natarajan’s nomination during the scrutiny process, alleging inconsistencies and incomplete disclosures in the documents submitted with her candidature.
Among the objections raised was the alleged non-disclosure of a legal matter reportedly pending before a court in Telangana. Election authorities subsequently examined the objections and decided to reject the nomination.
The decision has become a major setback for the Congress, which had hoped to mount a challenge in the Rajya Sabha election despite facing difficult arithmetic in the state assembly.
BJP Headed For Full House In MP
With the Congress candidate out of contention, BJP nominees Tarun Chugh and Rajneesh Agrawal are also set to secure their seats as expected.
The outcome will strengthen the BJP’s representation in the Upper House and further underline the party’s dominance in Madhya Pradesh politics.
The Rajya Sabha election, which initially appeared likely to witness political competition, now seems headed for an uncontested conclusion in favour of the ruling party.
