Nagpur: Nagpur police on Wednesday arrested Faheem Khan, identified as the key instigator behind the recent communal clashes in the city. The arrest comes after days of unrest that led to a curfew being imposed in 10 police station limits for the second consecutive day. The violence, which erupted on March 17, was reportedly triggered by a dispute over demands to relocate Mughal emperor Aurangzeb’s tomb out of Maharashtra.
Faheem Khan, a former Lok Sabha candidate from Nagpur who contested against Union Minister Nitin Gadkari in the 2024 elections, has been taken into custody following an intense crackdown by law enforcement. The police had earlier detained 50 individuals in connection with the clashes.
Meanwhile, a Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) court has remanded 19 accused in the case to police custody until March 21. The accused were produced before the court by Ganeshpeth police on Tuesday.
Maharashtra’s Minister of State for Home, Yogesh Kadam, has condemned the violence, calling it a “very serious matter.” He assured that strict action would be taken against those responsible. In addition, Kadam emphasized that the ongoing crackdown against illegal Bangladeshi migrants in Maharashtra would be intensified.
