Leaders of the ruling Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) combine in Maharashtra on Saturday expressed grief over the death of a 34-year-old woman following a rape and brutal assault in suburban Sakinaka, and said the culprit will be brought to justice.
They also condemned the attempts to `politicize’ the incident.
The woman was raped and brutalized with an iron rod inside a stationary tempo in the wee hours of Friday. She succumbed to the injuries during treatment at a hospital early Saturday morning. A 45-year-old man has been arrested in the case.
State Women and Child Development Minister Yashomati Thakur told reporters that the state government has started the process of providing counseling and financial assistance to the kin of the victim woman.
The Congress leader also expressed hope that the proposed `Shakti law’ for providing expeditious justice in the cases of crime against women will be enacted by the state legislature soon.
Minority affairs minister and NCP leader Nawab Malik lamented the incident and said the charge sheet in the case will be filed speedily.
The accused should be tried in a fast-track court, he said.
Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut said the manner in which the opposition was politicizing the incident to target the MVA government was unfortunate.
“Everyone is working to ensure that the culprit is punished severely,” Raut said.
Earlier in the day, BJP leader Pravin Darekar said that several incidents of sexual assault on women have been reported in the state, and criminals have lost the fear of law.
Chitra Wagh, state BJP vice president, sought to know why the state women’s commission does not have a chairperson for over a year.
