Mumbai: Leader of Opposition in Maharashtra Legislative Assembly, Devendra Fadnavis today launched a blistering attack against the ruling Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) ahead of the two-day monsoon session of the state legislature beginning tomorrow (Monday).
Addressing a press conference on the eve of the session, Fadnavis alleged that the state government led by Shiv Sena has locked the democracy (by curtailing the legislature session).
Stating that business of the House took place only for 36 days in the last seven sessions, he said during the COVID pandemic the session was held only for 14 days. On the contrary, during the same period, he said, the Parliament session was held for 70 days.
“In the name of COVID pandemic the state government has locked the democracy. What has not happened in 60 years since the state was formed is happening now”, Fadnavis alleged.
The former chief minister of Maharashtra also alleged that the government has barred the legislators from making use of the legislative tool.
“Legislative tool like raising issues through calling attention motion cannot be used. These legislative tools have been given to us (legislators) by the Constitution of India and we have been deprived to use them”, he added.
Fadnavis said the government has asked us to raise the issue through supplementary demands. “However, we have been told that issues of OBC reservation, Maratha reservation, farmers’ issue cannot be asked through supplementary demands”, he added.
“Graft cases have taken place. There is corruption taking place in various departments of the state government. An extortion case has taken place. But the government does not want us to ask to raise these issues. The state government is escaping from the session and does not want to face the opposition”, he added.
Further attacking the state government, he said that there is no consensus among the ruling three coalition parties.
Speaking on the issue of reservation for the Maratha community, Fadnavis said the state government did not refer it to the state backward class commission. “The state government is authorized to grant reservation to the Marathas. But first, they have to take action with regards to proving the Marathas as backwards”, he said.
The senior BJP leader also asked for overhauling of the Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC) in the backdrop of a youth who allegedly committed suicide.
He also took potshots at the MVA government on increasing the publicity budget to Rs. 246 crore from Rs. 26 crores during the previous regime.
On forming a possible coalition
Fadnavis said, there was no enmity with Shiv Sena. “There were differences (with Shiv Sena). Our friend who won with us (during assembly polls) went with those against whom they contested”, he said. According to media reports, senior Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut had met with BJP leader Ashish Shelar recently.
“In politics, there is no ‘ifs and buts’…the decision is taken on the circumstances”, he added.
