The toll booths were established by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) as part of a broader project to construct 55 flyovers in Mumbai. Designed to recover the construction costs of these flyovers, the toll booths began operating in 2002, following the completion of the project stages in 1999.
The call for toll waivers, especially at Mumbai’s entry points, has been a persistent issue in the region. Political factions such as the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) and both Uddhav Thackeray and Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena groups have consistently advocated for this change.
