In a significant move ahead of the assembly elections, the Maharashtra government announced on Monday that all light motor vehicles (LMVs) will enjoy a complete toll waiver at five key entry points into Mumbai, starting at 12 am tonight. This decision was made during the state cabinet meeting led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.

The toll waiver applies to the Dahisar, Mulund West (LBS Road), Vashi, Airoli, and Mulund East toll booths, where LMVs were previously charged Rs 45 for passage. This initiative aims to facilitate smoother transportation during the festive season, particularly with Diwali around the corner.

The cabinet’s decision reflects a series of populist measures taken to attract voters in light of the upcoming assembly elections next month. The scrapping of tolls at these booths has long been a demand from various political parties and citizen groups. It is expected to significantly benefit commuters, allowing them to travel in and out of Mumbai without incurring toll fees. Light motor vehicles include cars, jeeps, vans, and small trucks, primarily used for transporting passengers or goods.

The toll booths were established by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) as part of a broader project to construct 55 flyovers in Mumbai. Designed to recover the construction costs of these flyovers, the toll booths began operating in 2002, following the completion of the project stages in 1999.

The call for toll waivers, especially at Mumbai’s entry points, has been a persistent issue in the region. Political factions such as the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) and both Uddhav Thackeray and Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena groups have consistently advocated for this change. Recently, Aaditya Thackeray, a leader of the Uddhav faction, reiterated the demand for toll exemptions, highlighting the significance of this announcement in the context of Mumbai’s commuters and the political landscape.

As Mumbai prepares to embrace this new toll-free travel, the government hopes the decision will resonate positively with the electorate, especially during this festive season.
